This one bedroom apartment measures only 600sf but accommodates the varied daily needs of a busy family. The client had a limited budget and needed practical design solutions all while supporting a sense of play and discovery. The solution was to provide extensive storage throughout the apartment to conceal and selectively display family heirlooms and children belongings.
Custom cabinetry offers a compact home office with pull out keyboard, located next to a height adjustable table which is also an extension of the kitchen. The table and counter are clad in the same butcher block wood providing additional counter space at one height, and can be lowered for dining, working and studying. Along the window wall a low cabinet conceals radiators, discreetly contains storage and provides a window seating area. Floating cube furniture elements provide additional storage, seating and play surfaces.
Understated living room cabinetry opens to reveal a children’s art center which can be closed to hide inevitable mayhem, while also integrating significant amounts of storage for the family’s large library and precious mementos. The bedroom incorporates a playful custom designed “bunk-bed” solution with ample storage for books, toys and clothing. The bathroom was modernized to make the small space feel spacious and accommodate frequent bathing.
