Shine is a 6000sf glass, steel and concrete duplex addition to a former shoe polish factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with sweeping views of the city.
On the first level of the penthouse, a master suite with bath is connected to a double height solarium. An expansive Living room and open Kitchen occupy a thirty foot high space that formerly housed a massive storage tank. A home office and interior courtyard illuminated by a skylight look out at an extensive roof garden.
The second level accommodates two guest bedrooms, a full bath and mezzanines that overlook the living room and solarium.
A primary goal of the project was to minimize energy consumption. Brise-soleils provide shading at the South facing walls. Operable skylights facilitate venting and cooling during summer months. In addition geothermal heating and cooling connected to a building wide system is utilized in the floor slabs.
The exterior structure is composed of exposed steel with fixed and sliding glass panels. Extensive decks of concrete and steel with hardwood plank surface provide dramatic outdoor spaces.
